WLAN - STANDARD IEEE 802.11e
QUALITY OF SERVICE

Wireless networks, like IEEE 802.11 / Wireless LAN do not only give comfort, but also numerous safety gaps. The IEEE 802.11 are therefore working on the extention of the Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP), which will lead to a future standard. This work began in July 1999 as Task Group E , with the main task being to strengthen the safety mechanisms in order to offer security next to the original objectives of WEP.
The weaknesses of WEP were already detected by Task Group E. Solutions, which would exclude such potential attacks, were suggested and build into the design of IEEE 802.11e. In order to meet extreme sophisticated attacks, additional improvement suggestions exists, and it will be part of the standard authentification protocolls on higher (OSI-) levels.
